Teletok engages new CEO

October 7, 2024

Teletok, the sole telecommunications provider for Tokelau and a longstanding member of PITA, has announced the engagement of a new CEO, Mr. Alani Faiai. Formerly the Chief Technical Officer of Samoa Vodafone, Mr. Faiai brings with him many years of experience in the telecommunications industry. Appointed on 1st October, Alani will relocate to Tokelau in the month of November.

Alani Faiai, CEO Teletok

Tokelau, one of the smallest and most remote island nations in the world, relies heavily on telecommunications to stay connected with the rest of the globe. Without these vital services, the islands would be even more isolated.

It’s encouraging to see Tokelau making significant strides in connectivity. In 2022, Tokelau became part of the global digital superhighway with its connection to the Southern Cross NEXT submarine cable, which is extended to all islands via domestic submarine cables. Earlier on in 2017, Teletok rolled out 4G cellular services across its islands—Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakaofo—ensuring seamless local broadband access for the people of Tokelau. Notably, Tokelau remains unique as the only nation in the world powered entirely by solar energy.

Being part of the great Pacific family in PITA, Teletok benefits from staying updated on technological opportunities, learning from case experiences shared by other islands, and participating in regular telecom forums. This involvement helps Tokelau access insights and regional support, which are essential for small island nations navigating the rapidly evolving telecom landscape..

Congratulations to Teletok, and to Alani on this leadership engagement.

Alani takes over this position from his predecessor, Tealofi Enosa, who served in this role for nearly a decade and stepping down in July 2023.

Footnote.

Niue, a self governing island country is another small island nation in the Pacific that has also made significant strides in broadband connectivity with international submarine cable and 4G cellular mobile coverage. Mr Anurag Tandon, the current CEO of Telecom Niue was appointed in July, 2022. Telecom Niue formerly the Department of Posts and Telecommunications is also a longstanding member of PITA.

Both Niue and Tokelau have very small populations of less than 2,000 people.
