PacNOG 33: Continuing the critical Capacity Building for Internet Engineers in the Pacific
July 1, 2024PacNOG 33 continues its tradition of advancing the skills and knowledge of Internet network engineers in the Pacific region. Organized by PITA in partnership with APNIC, ICANN, and NSRC, this 33rd conference and workshop series was held in Guam. The event was co-hosted by the University of Guam and received local support from Guam Exchange (IT&E), Docomo Pacific, GTA Guam, and Pacific Data Services.
Special thanks go to Jose Santiago of Guam Exchange, whose leading efforts, along with Ms. Lone Skye Llagas of Docomo Pacific, in helping us secure facilities in Guam were instrumental in making this event possible. Their support enabled us to choose Guam as the venue for PacNOG 33.
The conference, designed to bring together network operators to discuss important trends and best practices for internet services, opened with welcome remarks from representatives of PITA and the University of Guam. This was followed by updates from PacNOG partners, highlighting initiatives such as APNIC’s DASH program and ICANN’s KINDNS, along with a discussion on career paths in the industry.
The main conference sessions focused on various aspects of internet network operations and technologies. Key topics included an analysis of the Pacific Internet Routing Table using RouteViews, insights into the GOREX/APONET initiative, and techniques for measuring network performance with RIPE Atlas. Another session explored the implementation of MANRS, a global initiative to improve the security and resilience of the internet’s routing infrastructure.
Special topics and tutorials were also featured, including an in-depth look at cables, datacenters, and IXPs, as well as the Mini Internet Project Tutorial. This hands-on educational platform offers a practical approach to understanding complex internet and networking concepts, enabling participants to set up their own mini-Internet and use it as a basis for training events and networking bootcamps.
The day concluded with a technical tour of the GTA TeleGuam Datacenter, followed by an evening networking social function, providing a relaxed environment for further discussion and collaboration.
Thence on, for the next four days, PacNOG 33 featured two parallel tracks, offering hands-on and in-depth coverage in these two key areas:
Internet Routing Infrastructure Security and Operations (RISO) Workshop
This five-day technical workshop was dedicated to teaching the skills required for configuring scalable and secure routing, as well as the best practices for operating the networks that constitute today’s Internet. Participants were equipped to become fully conversant with modern Internet routing security requirements, enabling them to implement these techniques in their own networks and contribute to the stability of the global Internet.
Internet Network Monitoring and Management (NMM) Workshop
This workshop provided an introduction to Network Management and Monitoring, covering the fundamental concepts of networking, Linux, and various Free Open Source Software (FOSS) tools that can be used to enhance network telemetry. Designed for engineers, network managers, operators, and security policymakers, the workshop offered a practical approach to improving network management and monitoring capabilities, helping participants better utilize tools for network performance and security.
